Romantic Portugal's Alentejo Beaches

"Portuguese is cheerful and sweet, like a language of birds." – Paulo Rónai

The Valentine's Day romantic vibes stayed strong this week with more requests for honeymoons and wedding anniversary trips too. Portugal was top of mind, and I'm thrilled because it's one of my favorites and I love to share it with first time visitors. A couple celebrating their anniversary want to see a lot in their 13 days, and they'll be starting in Porto then head to Lisbon, the Alentejo, and the Algarve - spending three nights in each. They love the beach, history, local culture and small, family-owned vineyards - a perfect combo for Portugal.

The new honeymoon request for Portugal is also for lovers of private vineyard visits to wineries that don't export commercially, so these are two delicious itineraries in the making. I'm especially excited the honeymooners will pair Lisbon with a relaxing beach hotel, and I finally get to propose an amazing property along the Alentejo Coast (pictured above). I've been waiting for the right clients for this region! The beaches here begin about an hour south of Lisbon, but they feel a world away. Alentejo beaches feel off-the-beaten track; tourists are more aware of the Algarve on Portugal's Mediterranean coast. In the Alentejo, you'll enjoy the country's longest stretch of beach as well as rocky coves, sandy inlets between dunes and cliffs, resort towns, and well-preserved, secluded beaches - plus fishing villages, nature sanctuaries, Roman ruins, horseback riding, surfing, diving, canoeing, dolphin watching, and plenty of opportunities for day trips inland to see more of the Alentejo sights like cork forests, ancient cromlechs, and white-walled, medieval, hilltop towns.

One of the best ways to experience Porto and the Douro Valley in the north is on a Douro River cruise. I've sailed twice with AmaWaterways on the Douro River, and they do a beautiful job. AmaWaterways has several specially-themed river cruises I think our Nine Muses Travel community would like too.

Keep the Portugal requests coming! I have excellent partners there who help craft terrific itineraries, and it's such a joy to work on trips to this amazing country. To me, Portugal checks all the boxes!
