Have you heard of "set-jetting?" Some hotels featured in movies and on TV series begin to feel like they're their own character, like the Park Hyatt Tokyo from one of my favorite films, Lost in Translation, and they become tourist destinations themselves.
For White Lotus fans, we hear season three was filmed at Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui, and now would be a great time to book your stay - before the set-jetters start making reservations! Nine Muses Travel has access to the coveted Four Seasons Preferred Partner program, which means my clients receive exclusive amenities (upgrades, credits, breakfast, etc.) and are recognized as VIP guests.
I have a feeling this is going to be satirized on the show, but Koh Samui has Resident Healers who blend sound therapy, Reiki, and breathwork to enhance your well-being. Their Secret Night Spa is Thai-inspired wellness that starts with a Tibetan singing bowls ritual, then a lava shell massage by candlelight and a bath with coconut and lotus petals. You can even try an exclusive Zodiac-inspired spa treatment tailored for each element - Earth, Water, Air, and Fire. The resort also includes non-motorized water sports like snorkeling, plus private yacht charters provide an exclusive opportunity to visit nearby islands and secluded beaches. I'm thinking these will all make an appearance in The White Lotus!
Before the show premiers, beat the set-jetting crowd at the end of January, a festive season to visit Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui and welcome in the Year of the Snake. At this time of year, families across most Chinese and Buddhist faiths come together to give thanks and look forward to a good year ahead. Koh Samui’s Executive Chef Ruslan Shipunov says, “This Lunar New Year we are taking things up a notch with exceptional dining experiences such as the Hot Pot Night at the Beach House, and Fisherman’s Night on the Beach so that guests can truly appreciate the wealth of seafood on offer.”

Wandering the cobblestoned lanes of Dubrovnik like a Lannister. Slurping down laksa noodles at Singapore’s Newton Food Centre à la the cast of Crazy Rich Asians. One of travel’s most enduring trends has a new name – “set-jetting” – and planning a trip to the location of a beloved movie or TV show has never been more popular. Bonus: Hotels and destinations are seeing big payoffs after their on-screen appearances.
Channeling your favorite characters IRL isn’t exactly a brand-new phenomenon: Sex and the City inspired countless pilgrimages to NYC’s Magnolia Bakery in the early aughts, and New Zealand’s “Middle-earth” nickname is practically official, thanks to The Lord of the Rings. But a pandemic’s worth of binge-watching and a boom in wanderlust-inducing shows and docuseries such as Emily in Paris, The Bear, and Stanley Tucci’s Searching for Italy has given the trend a new boost.
No onscreen escape feels primed for set-jetting more than HBO’s hit drama The White Lotus, whose filming locations – Hawaii’s Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea in season one and season two’s Four Seasons San Domenico Palace Taormina in Sicily – saw bookings skyrocket after their star turns. The show’s cast of privileged, bratty holidaymakers (who always bring along a heavy dose of adulterous drama) even spurred a slate of White Lotus-inspired itineraries, such as Abercrombie & Kent Italy’s seven-day tour of Sicily.
Earlier this year, a post on the series’ official Instagram page confirmed the rumor that had been swirling for months: The White Lotus’ third season will see its cast head to Thailand, where a (fictional) beachfront outpost of The White Lotus Resort & Spa has opened its doors – a recently released teaser gave viewers a sneak peek. (Recognizing this as the ultimate product-placement opportunity, Thailand’s tourism board incentivized HBO through millions of dollars of tax rebates.)
Season three of The White Lotus is expected to premiere sometime in 2025, when travelers will likely be hearing much more about the show’s luxe settings. Pro tip: Start making plans now to guarantee first dibs on the soon-to-be-coveted reservations.
