Top 8 Fall Foliage Destinations in the U.S.

Today is the first day of Fall, and it's the perfect time to plan your leaf-peeping escapades around the country! Domestic U.S. travel restrictions are gradually loosening, and the next few weeks are about to reveal nature's breathtaking fall foliage.

A new trend now is travel pods where more than one family or household make plans to travel together, and a fall respite with your dear ones is the stuff of lifelong memories made with all your senses. Brisk air, cider donuts, crunching leaves, forest smells, and the brilliance of changing leaves all create a sensational seasonal getaway!

Bring me all your ideas, and you'll be surprised how much added value I bring to even your local trips, with perks and amenities exclusively for my clients. I hope you enjoy this curated list of Nine Muses Travel's favorite leaf-peeping destinations for 2020!

The Berkshires, Massachusetts

Anyone who's read Muse News for a while knows I adore the Berkshires of western Massachusetts; besides its bucolic beauty, it's packed with world-class fine art and performing arts. MASS MoCA is one of my favorite places on earth, and there are lots of other gems not to miss like The Clark and Norman Rockwell Museum. I can arrange for a local foliage enthusiast to join you for a private guided tour of off-the-beaten path viewing spots. Lessons and Luxury Along the Appalachian Trail is one of my more personal blogs and is a glimpse into my love for the Berkshires and Vermont too.

Stowe, Vermont

Vermont is tied in my heart with the Berkshires for year-round journeys to nature and the arts, and is a classic leaf-peeping pilgrimage. "Vermont" is derived from the French words for "green mountain," and the fall foliage here is legendary. Covered bridges, quaint villages, and all those orange and yellow hues make Stowe a wonderful home base to explore the mountains then round out the day with a delicious guided tasting tour of Stowe's best local breweries and cideries.

The Adirondacks, New York

In my home state we have the expansive Adirondack Mountains, which lay claim to one of the country's longest leaf-peeping seasons. Lake George is another one of my "happy places" and is highly recommended. For a novel birds-eye vantage point of the fall display, head to The Wild Center for a special, pre-opening tour along its elevated, treetop canopy walk. Read more about New York regions in my blog: Noteworthy New York Escapes.

Bar Harbor, Maine

Acadia National Park is known as one of America's foremost leaf-peeping destinations and offers dramatic scenery with an awe-inspiring ocean backdrop. Experience its kaleidoscopic autumn colors on foot, bicycle, or even from above in an authentic vintage biplane. Check out my recent blog for more explorations around Maine: Maine Attraction: The Best Places to Visit Now.

Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

If the perfect Instagram-worthy snapshot is what you're after this autumn, look no further than Oregon's dazzling Columbia River Gorge, where the temperate rainforest's fall colors meet towering waterfalls to create one of Mother Nature's most photogenic works. Read more about it and surrounding regions at my blog: Wild Wonders of the Pacific Northwest.

Litchfield, Connecticut

Conveniently located just a short drive away from the northeast's major metropolitan areas, Litchfield is a quintessential New England town filled with historic charm, covered bridges, and densely forested hills that provide unparalleled fall foliage-viewing opportunities. Take in Connecticut's colorful canopy of fall by staying in a luxury treehouse! See how: Luxury Tree Houses for Getting High on Life

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

With summer over and ski season just around the corner, popular Jackson Hole quiets down in late September for fall to announce its presence with a brilliant explosion of color throughout our country's least populated state. Combine Jackson with a stay at one of the country's best ranches and really get outdoors to enjoy the changing seasons. Learn more here: Guide to Great American Ranches.

Park City, Utah

Park City beckons fall leaf-peepers with a taste for outdoors adventure. Experience panoramic vistas of peak foliage at mile-high elevations from the top of the Deer Valley ski lift, then venture into the alpine forests by foot, mountain bike, or off-road vehicle. How about combining this with a glamping experience? There are several glamping opportunities in Utah you can read about on my blog: Glamping: The Glamorous Way to Camp.
